Richie Pugh’s side simply couldn’t get their hands on the ball against Canada in the morning session where his side suffered a 31-0 loss.

But tries by Callum Williams, Cole Swannack and Morgan Sieniawski in the first half against Zambia eased nerves in the afternoon session as Wales cruised to a 21-5 interval lead.

Wales never looked in danger in the second half as tries by Luke Treharne, Callum Carson and Chris Smith guided Wales to a 38-5 victory.

Olympic champions Fiji now await Wales who must pull off a shock to ensure a quarter-final berth.

South Africa and Scotland ensured their progress to Saturday evening’s quarter-finals by overcoming Tonga and Malaysia in pool B. An impressive Scotland outfit thrashed Tonga 41-0 and Malaysia 50-12. South Africa beat Malaysia 46-0 before overcoming Tonga 36-5.

Olympic champions Fiji, who have never won Commonwealth gold, sit on top of Pool C after beating Zambia convincingly 52-0 followed by a hard-fought win over Canada by a 19-12 score.

The competition continues on Saturday with the final round of pool matches in the morning session from 09:00-13:30.

The competition reaches its exciting knockout phase as the women’s semi-finals and men’s quarter-finals take place in the afternoon session on Saturday from 17:30-22:30 BST, while the medals will be decided on Sunday evening.
