The Welsh scrum-half, who announced his retirement from rugby due to injury earlier this week, has been offered the job of defence coach with his former club. And that would see him reunited with Jenkins who was yesterday unveiled as the new kicking coach at the Arms Park.

Howley and Jenkins played 33 times together for Wales and formed an almost un-breakable partnership during the three years they shared at Cardiff.

Blues coach Dai Young, who played with both for club and country, said: ‘We have spoken to Rob and it would obviously be a huge boost to have someone of his experience and ability on board.

‘But he is sure to have a number of other offers so I think it will be a week or two until he makes a decision.

‘It is great to have Neil on board, not only for his obvious kicking abilities but his overall analysis for the young outside-halves we have here at the club.’

Allan Lewis, coach of the Celtic Warriors region that was disbanded last summer, has been appointed as team manager of the srtuggling Blues.
