The Millennium Stadium is gearing up for a supercross and motorsport spectacular this weekend for the fourth and final round of the Maxxis British Supercross Championship and British Open Supercross title holder, Welshman Neil Prince has hailed the Cardiff event as ‘amazing’.
Prince, from Wrexham, has held the British Open Supercross title for the past 5 years and said, “This is the biggest supercross event in the UK and the atmosphere is amazing.
“I finished in second place last year and I desperately want to improve my results this weekend but it’s going to be tough.
“Future West have brought in some of the best riders in supercross. The Alessi brothers are very quick and they will certainly keep us on our toes. It’s the first time they have been to the UK so they will get a great reception.
“They are going to be my main rivals along with Carl Nunn and Paul Cooper. However, I have been training hard over the past couple of weeks so I will pull out all the stops. It’s vital to get a good start but there’s no doubt I’m really looking forward to this event.”
Prince will be joined by the very best of British riders including Paul Cooper, Carl Nunn, Mark Hucklebridge, James Noble, Shaun Simpson, Adam Lyons, Jordan Rose, Ryan Voase, David Campbell, Bryan Mackenzie, Danny Veale and fellow reigning champion Lewis Gregory.
Meanwhile, America’s rising star Mike Alessi is set to make his British Supercross debut at Saturday’s supercross bonanza, after signing an exclusive deal.
Alessi, recently signed by KTM to race the 2005 American 125cc Motocross Championship, is added to the list of big names racing in the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, December 4. Alessi will be joined by brother Jeff in one of the best-ever fields assembled for a race in Britain.
Mike Alessi made his European debut in the Paris-Bercy supercross and was disqualified from the final race for aggressive racing. Alessi, who is tipped to follow in the wheel tracks to Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart to supercross and motocross super-stardom, is expected to bring that level of commitment to his British race debut in the Welsh capital. He will be joined in Cardiff by brother Jeff and fellow American Mike Brown. After winning the opening round in Sheffield Brown has now signed to race in Europe in 2005 for RWJ Honda.
Adding to the international flavour will be Australia’s Kim Ashkenazi, South Africa’s Neville Bradshaw and Canadian Kyle Beaton.
An action-packed night of supercross racing will also feature the Best of British clubmen and youth class racers. The supermoto class, which also impressed fans in Cardiff last time around, will see newly-crowned American champion Kurt Nicoll taking on the best of home-based talent. Nicoll, who manages all of KTM’s off-road racing efforts, is sure to be a strong challenger to Danny Tollett who has won both races in the series so far.
Making the whole evening even more special will be Wales’ own world distance record jumper Jason Rennie and Canada’s freestyle motocross star Jeff Fehr. A previous visitor to Britain, Fehr will attempt a 70 foot back flip along with an attempt to complete a world indoor back flip distance record.
Five-times Guinness World Record holder Rennie will attempt another world record indoor jump this time by jumping diagonally across the stadium.
Rennie, who is 34 and hails from North Wales commented: “I made my world record indoor jump of 160 ft last year at the Millennium Stadium and this year I am hoping to break it. It’s going to be great performing in front of my fellow countrymen.
“I’m going diagonally across the stadium this year so it will be very different to last year. I had major knee surgery not so long ago and still don’t have full movement in my knee but it shouldn’t affect my performance. The wind is a big factor with jumping long distances – I’m just glad we are inside for this world record attempt, it takes a bit of pressure off me”.
Rennie also holds world records for the longest jump with a passenger, the longest jump from a moving ramp (120ft) and the most heavy vehicles jumped (21).
A spokesman for promoters Future West said: “The Millennium Stadium event was a huge success last November with a record number of over 20,000 spectators. This year’s event is sure to be better with the vast array of talent on show in supercross, supermoto, freestyle and distance jumping.”

On event day, tickets will be available from the Millennium Stadium ticket shop from 9am, from the Marquee at Gate 3 from 8:00 am, from the ticket booth at Gate 7 from 2:00 pm.
Customers can purchase a wristband enabling them to watch the Supercross heats during the day on Saturday from 8am from Gate 3 of the Millennium Stadium. In order to purchase the wristband customers must have first purchased tickets for the evening’s action.
