It means they will face Georgia in their semi-final, with the winners of that game facing either New Zealand or Australia to the 5th place final. Ryan Woodman’s side will take on the Georgians at Paarl on Sunday, 9 July (kick-off 3.pm BST).Â
The game will be a fascinating pre-cursor to the battle between the respective senior sides of the two countries at the World Cup in France later this summer, when Warren Gatland’s Welsh team will be seeking revenge for defeat at Principality Stadium last year.Â
Wales beat Georgia 30-24 in the 2022 Six Nations U20 Summer Series in Italy last year in a game in which the lead changed hands four times and both sides scored three tries. They also beat them 10-9 at the 2016 World Rugby U20 Championships.
The Georgians won two of their pool matches, beating Argentina 20-0 and Italy 30-17, and only went down to host nation South Africa 33-23.Â
After completing a clean sweep of their three pool games with victory over Wales, the French went into the final four as the top seed. Their reward is a semi-final against England, who edged New Zealand on points difference to claim the best runner-up position after both finished on 10 competition points.Â
England were also unbeaten in their pool, drawing 22-22 with Australia, 34-34 with Ireland and beating Fiji 53-7. The Irish topped that pool thanks to a 30-10 triumph over the Aussies and a 47-27 victory over Fiji.Â
Ireland, Grand Slam champions in the Six Nations, will play South Africa in the first semi-final on Sunday. The Junior Springboks denied Georgia an historic first U20 Championship semi-final with a comeback 24-16 victory against Argentina in the final match of the pool stages.  Â
The semi-finals for ninth place overall will see Italy tackle Fiji and Argentina meet Japan. Â
