International rugby makes a welcome return to Stadiwm CSM in Colwyn Bay for the tournament opener against Scotland on February 2nd. Wales’ other two home games will be held at Cardiff Arms Park on March 7th and 15th against France and Italy respectively.
Wales will be making their first Championship appearances in the Welsh capital city since taking on Scotland in 2012, although a series of summer matches were held behind closed doors during the pandemic of 2021.
Interim Performance Director at WRU, Huw Bevan, says, “Wales U20s are looking to build on the success of their U20s World Rugby Championship campaign this summer in South Africa.
“They put in some sterling performances, taking New Zealand to the wire and producing some really exciting rugby during the course of the tournament.
“A number of players will be returning from that squad so there’s plenty of promising talent to watch. So we encourage all supporters to get behind the future stars of our game at this year’s U20 Six Nations!”
A number of players who featured for Wales in the summer are now figuring prominently for their regions in the United Rugby Championship. Dan Edwards and Harri Houston have made their senior Ospreys debuts while Cameron Winnett and Mackenzie Martin have both shone for Cardiff Rugby.
Ospreys back row Morgan Morse and Dragons flanker Ryan Woodman have both made their regional debuts for their regions and both could again be key players in the Welsh squad.
The move to Cardiff Arms Park for the two U20s home matches in March will allow the squad to capitalise on crowds in Cardiff for the senior men’s Guinness Six Nations matches and expose the team to new, positive challenges.
It also creates an opportunity to diversify the rugby events held in North Wales to include U20s, the Celtic Challenge tournament* following a successful pilot held in Conwy last January and an U18s girls’ festival which is due to take place at Easter.
“North Wales is a hot bed of rugby activity, especially in the women’s and girls’ game,” adds Bevan.
“We’re hugely grateful for the support we receive from Conwy Council and the collaborative relationship we’ve built over the years.
“It’s one which has enabled us to enjoy many successful rugby campaigns in North Wales with the U20s and women’s rugby and now with the second phase of the Celtic Challenge tournament and the U18s girls rugby festival scheduled in Easter.
“The relationship we have with North Wales, and it’s world-class facilities at Stadiwm CSM, is an integral part of our player pathway strategy and we look forward to building on what we’ve created together.”
