Warren Gatland may have lost one wing this week following the decision by Louis Rees-Zammit to try his luck at American Football, but the Wales head coach can at least hang his hat on Dragons speedster Rio Dyer.

The 24-year-old has re-signed a multi-year contract at his home region and his looking to build on a career that has already seen him score 18 tries in 52 games – as well as pick up 184Welsh caps.

“I’ve been here since I was with the U16s, so it is a proud moment for me. I’ve grown up alongside many of my team-mates and really enjoy the environment that has been built here by Dai Flanagan,” said Dyer.

“We have a lot of talent in the squad that I believe we can grow with. We’ve got something good going on here now and everyone’s buying in to it.

“We’re confident we can turn things around and start putting in better performances and getting more wins.”

Having secured the long-term future of Dyer, Flanagan’s next goal is to ensure three more Welsh internationals – Leon Brown, Aaron Wainwright and Taine Basham – re-commit by the end of the season.

While Wainwright has surpassed the 25-cap threshold for players who want to move out of Wales and still be eligible to play internationally, Brown currently only has 23 caps and Basham is on 16.

“We want to retain our best young talent and build our club around talented, driven, and ambitious Gwent men who are proud to represent us. Rio personifies that and is a key figure for us going forward,” said head coach, Flanagan.

“Rio’s development over the last few seasons, for both club and country, has been truly impressive, alongside his attitude, professionalism, and desire to continue to improve. He wants to be a part of what we are building here in the long-term and we’re thrilled that his story will now continue as a Dragon.”
