The 29-year-old flanker, who played at the 2023 World Cup in France, can operate across the back row and is currently playing for Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby. He has won 15 caps for Tonga.
“We forward to the massive impact we know Solomone can make with us. He’s a tough and uncompromising man, someone who always wins collisions, and his ability to play across the back row will mean other players can thrive around him,” said Dragons head coach, Dai Flanagan.
“I’ve spoken to a number of people who know and have played alongside Solomone, and they have nothing but praise for him as both a person and performer. He’s a family man and a real leader of men, with international and Super Rugby experience.
Funaki made his Test debut for Tonga in 2021 against New Zealand and featured in the 2022 Pacific Nations Cup and 2023 World Cup campaigns. He will join current Wales duo Aaron Wainwright and Taine Basham in the Dragons back row stable, along with Ollie Griffiths, Harri Keddie, Sean Londsdale and Ryan Woodman.
The Dragons have also recruited South African centre Chris Hollis on a short-term contract to the end of the season. The 25-year-old, who can operate at centre or wing, makes the move to Rodney Parade after a spell with Stormers.
