The Welsh Rugby Union is creating a new tradition that will deliver a moment of remembrance and recognition for all former Wales internationals and relevant dignitaries who have passed, at the final match of any given year on home soil.

A touching tribute will be paid that includes anyone who won a cap for Wales senior men’s or women’s side, coached a senior team or served on the WRU board or other high office.
The fitting eulogy will replace the more ad hoc tributes that are often made as a result of the timing of someone’s passing, ensuring that suitable recognition, time and respect is given to everyone who fits into the categories described.

This season Wales senior men face South Africa at Principality Stadium in the Autumn Nations Series in the final game of the year on Saturday 23rd November.
The new plans, for example, mean a fitting tribute to the highly respected former head coach Kevin Bowring, who sadly died last month, will be made at the special ceremony held before the Springbok’s game.

“We are putting new protocols in place which will ensure we give due respect and attention to all those who have served Welsh rugby in the appropriate way,” said Principality Stadium manager Mark Williams.

“The new moment of remembrance and recognition will happen at every home rugby match which falls at the end of a given year.

“This way we will ensure that all contributions are recognised in an appropriate, poignant and fitting way.

“We expect the moment to have real poignancy and for it to be well received by the friends, families and loved ones of those who have passed as well as by the whole rugby family in Wales.

“The occasion will mark a new tradition for the whole of Welsh rugby to be proud of.”
