Warren Gatland could get a post-Autumn Nations Series boost this weekend with the return to action of British & Irish Lions wing Josh Adams for Cardiff Rugby in their BKT United Rugby Championship derby clash with the Dragons at the Arms Park.

Adams joined up with the Wales Squad for training during this month’s trio of international matches and says he is “itching to be back” after a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt said his 59-times capped wing is in contention for a place for the home clash with the Dragons. He trained with the team on Tuesday and is hoping to end a six-month period without a game sooner rather than later.

He was last in action in the win over the Sharks in May and too the decision to miss Wales’ summer tour to Australia to give himself the time to get back to 100% fitness.

“I finally feel good and I’m itching to get back out on there. I thought I’d be back sooner, but I should know from previous injuries that things never go as smoothly as you want,” said the 29-year-old Adams.

“Watching from the sidelines gets harder as time goes on. You miss those moments on the pitch and in the changing room after wins.

“As you get older you realise how quickly the first part of your career has gone and that you probably took things for granted. Now you appreciate things a lot more.”

Adams could find himself playing against one of the players who has filled in for Wales in his absence, Rio Dyer, at the weekend. Other possible international head-to-heads are at scrum half – Ellis Bevan v Rhodri Williams – and in the back row – James Botham v Taine Basham.

Sherratt is also hoping that two more of his international contingent, lock Seb Davies and full back Jacob Beetham, can be considered. Players such as Teddy Williams and Evan Lloyd will be keen to get a run out having sat out the three ANS games while kin the Wales Squad.

“They’re available but we’ll go on an individual basis – how much they’ve played and how they’re feeling,” said Sherratt on his returning international players.
