Morgan Allen of Pontypool takes on Benji Williams of Cardiff RFC

Allen giving young pups a run for their money

Much has been made of Super Rygbi Cymru being a great development tool for Wales’ up and coming players, but it’s also a competition where players with a proven pedigree can still show the young bucks a thing or two.

Pontypool’s Morgan Allen is a classic example. The well travelled back row has proven a great asset to Pooler this season and he shows no signs of letting up just yet.

Morgan signed for Pontypool in the summer, having spent the previous six seasons at Cardiff, five of which as captain. He’s never been shy of carrying the ball into traffic and the latest update of statistics show why opposition coaches look out for his name on any Pooler team annoucement.

He is one of only three players to have smashed through the century barrier for carries – teammate Daniel Hill and RGC’s Sam Williams are the others. Allen has hammered into opposition defenders on 125 occasions with Hill (116) and Williams (115) also packing a punch.

With plenty of ball Allen has been able to utilize his skillset perfectly to lead the way in beating defenders. Normally the backs gain all the plaudits when it comes to beating defenders, but Allen is showing those who wear numbers nine to 15 don’t have things their own way.

He is the only player to have eluded more than 50 tacklers after 11 rounds of SRC action. His total of 54 easily outsrtrips his nearest challenges, wingers Aaron Warren (32) and Tom Bowen (28).

Elsewhere Ebbw Vale fly half Evan Lloyd has bec0me the first player to reach a century of points after the Steelmen’s victory against Cardiff last weekend. Pontypool’s Kieran Meek isn’t far behind though, currently with 96 points next to his name.
