Culture is the underlying thread that sets the tone and feeling of a community rugby club. Your standards are set by the committee and leadership of the club, and should encompass shared beliefs, customs, traditions, and be underpinned by the values of the WRU
Your culture should ensure that your club is an inclusive and welcoming environment so that people in your community develop a sense of belonging for the club, with a people first philosophy.
Governance is how a club is administered and is non-negotiable. Committees must drive the importance of this approach in all that they do.
A positive approach to governance is not about ticking boxes for compliance purposes, it’s about working within a framework around key areas for decision making, risk, administrative controls, systems and processes of a club, and likewise, ensuring a fit-for-purpose ethos around club leadership, which demonstrates its value and culture.

The self-assessment acts as a toolkit that benefits clubs to evaluate against best practice on key areas of club management.
Member clubs can then identify areas of development in their club improvement plan, therefore ensuring their long-term sustainability.
In 2024, every WRU member club received a visit from the Places Team to complete a self-assessment.
The WRU through its collaboration with the University of South Wales Media students, visited one of our member clubs to get their feedback on how beneficial they found the assessment. Please watch the video to see what they had to say.
How can a club enquire about a visit from a member of the team?
The Places team are now performing a year 2 self-assessment review session with our member clubs. Contact your local Club Development officer to book in yours!
As part of a collaboration between the University of South Wales (USW) and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), we are pleased to be supporting the media students with opportunities to enhance their development and portfolio. The above videos of the Club Self-Assessment has been kindly produced and edited by a team of USW Media students.
