Oakdale Comprehensive product Matthew Watkins joined the Llanelli Scarlets in 2002. In March 2006 Watkins re-signed his contract with a new three-year deal. His former clubs include Newbridge, Pontllanfraith, Newport and Llanelli.

Former Newport centre Watkins has been capped for Wales eighteen times; he made his debut as a replacement against Italy in Wales’s loss to the Azzurri, 30-22, in February 2003. Watkins also has caps for the Wales A side, and scored a try on his debut against Uruguay. He has further represented Wales in Sevens tournaments, as part of the Wales Development XV and at Youth, U18 and U21 levels.

Watkins completed a successful 2006–2007 season with the Scarlets, making 25 appearances and rounding off the season with two double try-scoring displays against Edinburgh and the Cardiff Blues.
