Born in Sidcup, England, Tompkins represented England at several age-group levels before switching to Wales for his senior career.
Having attended Bishop Justus C of E Secondary School, Tompkins was a member of the Saracens academy system and made his debut for the full senior side in 2013.
He won the 2014 Junior World Championship with England, and also represented England Under-18s and Saxons. He qualifies for Wales because of his grandmother.
He helped Saracens win four Premiership titles in five seasons (2014/15, 2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19), three European Champions Cup titles (2015/16, 2016/17, 2018/19) and LV=Cup in 2014/15.
Tompkins joined Dragons in July 2020 on a year-long loan from Saracens.
Capped by Wales in all four games during the 2020 Guinness Six Nations, Tompkins scored a try on his debut against Italy at Principality Stadium in the opening round of matches
