The two fliers will go head-to-head at Rodney Parade on Thursday evening in the first of two back-to-back matches.
The Christmas derbies are a big moment in the campaign for each region and with 19-year-old Amos in his first full season at the Dragons, he is looking forward to the test. And despite being up against a British & Irish Lion and one of Wales’ most potent finishers, the down to earth Cardiff University student says he is looking forward to testing himself against Cuthbert.
“It will be a good challenge,” Amos said. “I like to pit myself against the best and he is a Lions Test winger and one of the best in the world – it will be nice to see how I go against him.
“Hopefully I can stop him getting on the score sheet. He does pop up with quite a few tries.”
Amos features alongside fellow internationals Andrew Coombs and Toby Faletau for the derby clash while there is also a welcome return for Fijian international Netani Talei.
Amos continued: “Alex is obviously an amazing player but with someone like him, you know a bit more what he is going to do – you know what is coming really.
“I don’t have a preference when it comes to big or small opponents. I think it’s nice to get your head around both and learn from both when you play against them. Alex is big, but he’s also very quick over the first 40 metres.”
Amos was a late call up to an injury-hit Wales squad in the autumn and was thrown in straight at the deep end, starting the 17-7 win over Tonga.
“The accuracy and intensity in training was a big thing,” he said, as he reviewed his time in the Wales camp.
“It is very switched on. Looking at people like Leigh Halfpenny and George North, their professionalism is at another level.
“The professionalism that Leigh shows is something I haven’t really seen before and hopefully it’s something I can emulate and bring to my game.”
Amos featured for Wales Under 20 in last summer’s Junior World Championship and admits to being surprised at his rate of progression. But now back with his region, his current focus is solely on taking on a Blues side which also features Halfpenny and Rhys Patchell.
“Having two games in quick succession kind of adds to it a bit,” said Amos.
“I think it’s something we are really looking forward to as a squad. Hopefully we can get some big crowds and put on a show for them.
“The first one is at Rodney Parade. Hopefully we can get a good win and then follow it up a week later down the Arms Park.”
Blues Director of Rugby Phil Davies, who recalls Gavin Evans to the centre and names Dan Fish on the left wing, said: “There was frustration in our dressing room after the Ospreys game and it is our job now to react in the right fashion and end 2013 on a high note.
“The Dragons are a dangerous and talented outfit who will also be keen to bounce back after the defeat to Connacht. We need to be prepared for a really physical and intense game.”
