Eleven years ago Contepomi slipped in under the radar to guide the Pumas to a shock 30-16 win on Welsh soil, scoring 25 points with a commanding performance. All week the public and media attention had focussed on rugby league recruit Iestyn Harris who was making his debut for Wales.
However on the big day he was completely overshadowed by Contepomi who pulled the strings expertly at fly half to secure the Pumas their first ever Test win over Wales.
Fast forward 11 years and Contepomi has quietly slipped back into the Pumas line-up at inside centre where he comes up against Jamie Roberts who has gained all the major headlines this week after announcing his departure from the Cardiff Blues.
The articulate Contepomi has fond memories of the rare Pumas victory over the Dragons.
“It’s one of the great memories of this team but I am the only survivor. For many of the players from that game, and every time we meet up to catch up, we always remember that game,” he said.
“It was one of our biggest wins away from home and gave us the confidence and mentality to look to win every game, no matter where.
“Wales is a rugby nation that we love, we’ve always been very in touch since the 1970s when we nearly beat them but lost in the last minute.
“It’s one of the places you always want to play and I was so lucky to be part of the team that beat Wales at the Millennium Stadium.”
Looking ahead to his clash with Roberts, the 35-year-old Contepomi added: “It’s a huge challenge. It’s like climbing Mount Everest. Jamie is one of the best centres in Europe and one of, if not the best in the world. As a player you want to play against the best and to have that challenge on Saturday and I’m looking forward to it.
“He’s a great guy and it’s delightful to watch him play but it’s not so good when he’s in front of you.
“Wales have a lot of important players and we see them as a unit. But Jamie has that extra x-factor. He has that experience now but we’re trying to analyse them as a unit. We’re trying to develop our game more than thinking about Wales and want to be more offensive.”
Roberts partner in the Welsh midfield, Scott Williams is hoping to stake his own claim for a permanent spot after replacing fellow Scarlet Johnathan Davies who has a groin injury.
“Obviously it is a bit unlucky for Jon but I need to take all the opportunities I can really,” said the 22-year-old.
“We have got a few good centres, a lot of good competition and it can only be a good thing as it brings out the best in all of us in training and we are all trying to outdo each other.
“To be involved in all the games is one of my targets. Jon was a bit unlucky this weekend and I back myself to step in and do an equal job and hopefully I can take my opportunity.”
