It was the Dragons’ first win of the season and further tries from Ashley Smith and Jonathan Evans ensured they picked up a try bonus point as well. Those five points also meant they moved out of the bottom two in the table and jumped three places in the table, overtaking Cardiff Blues along the way.
The home side got off to a flying start when Jason Tovey hammered over a penalty after four minutes and then Amos scampered away to bag an interception try seven minutes later. Tovery added the conversion and then set-up Amos for his second try to help hoist the Dragons into a 17-0 lead in the opening quarter.
This was Treviso’s third visit to Wales already this season and the early signs were that their latest trip was going to go the same way as their bonus point defeats at the Ospreys and the Scarlets. But they kept their line intact for the remainder of the half and reached the break 17-3 in arrears following a penalty by Joe Carlisle.
The second half started with the Dragons bagging their bonus point with tries from Smith and Evans as they stretched their lead to 27-3. Treviso rallied with tries from Matthew Luamanu and Leo Auva’a and a Carlisle conversion made it 27-15.
Auva’a’s try came when the Dragons were down to 14 men with Andy Powell in the sin-bin, but they didn’t concede any more points when they returned to full strength. Two more penalties from Tovey’s boot wrapped up the scoring and allowed everyone at Rodney Parade to heave a heavy sigh of relief.
