Six tries in a 41-33 triumph over Benetton Treviso in Italy earned Simon Easterby’s team a huge boost as they try to close the gap on the top four play-off teams.
Wing Frazier Climo helped himself to two of the half-a-dozen tries for the visitors and when Gareth Davies crossed for his try eight minutes into the second half the bonus point had been secured. Other tries came from hooker Kirby Myhill, wing Kristian Phillips and full back Jordan Williams.
Aled Thomas converted four of the tries, and added a penalty for an 11 point haul, but it was the boot of his opposite number Matt Berquist that had the better day. The Kiwi outside half ended with 18 points as he kept his side in touch on the scoreboard.
Berquist punished the Scarlets with four penalties and he also converted all three home tries, two of which came in the final 10 minutes.
A delighted Scarlets coach, Simon Easterby, felt his side got what they deserved. but praised Treviso for fighting back at the death.Â
“Last year we got ourselves into a good position and lost the game and we let them back into the game once again. But this time we held on and took the win,” said Easterby.
“We scored some good tries and came away with a bonus point win. The disappointing thing is we probably lost control again for a little while in the second half and gave them an opportunity to pressurise us.
“Coming here hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for us but we came here today, created lots of good opportunities and got what we deserved. Any win away from home is good. We have a lot of players absent at the moment but the guys really stood up.”
