The home side plundered the full five points for the fifth league game in a row on home soil against the Welsh region. They outscored the visitors by four tries to two to make it 31 tries to 9 and 250 points to 100 in the last six meetings between the two teams on Irish soil.
The defeat also meant the Blues fell to ninth place in the table after four rounds of matches, although second half tries from Cory Allen and Sam Warburton at least brought the visitors back into contention in a match that appeared to be drifting away from them at 27-9.
But no sooner had the Blues cut the gap to four points, Leinster cut loose once again to secure maximum points. The champions led 13-9 at the break thanks to a storming try from back row man Rhys Ruddock, while all the Blues’ points came from the boot of full back Rhys Patchell.
Two tries in the space of five minutes from Mick McGrath and Gordon D’Arcy, both converted by Ian Madigan, who ended the night with a haul of 17 points, turned the game on its head. Those 14 points pushed Leinster out to that 18 point lead and it seemed as though it was business as usual.
But then Allen made the most of a horrendous mistake on his own line by Madigan to get a try as a rich reward for following up his own kick and Warburton took an inside pass from Dan Fish to romp over for a second Blues try.
With Patchell, who kicked 13 points on the night, adding both conversions the contest was back on and the result back in the melting pot. But a final penalty from Madigan and a last gasp try from replacement scrum half Luke McGrath, once again converted, not only secured victory for the home side, but also earned them a bonus point.
