A brace from Wales centurion Gareth Thomas on his Blues starting debut was inspirational as the Cardiff side ran amok in the first half. Further tries from skipper Xavier Rush, Jason Spice and Tom James completed a good evening’s work for Dai Young’s team in front of fervent home support.
The home side looked on top of their game form the opening whistle and were rewarded with a try after just four minutes when scrum half Spice found his way over.
And were it not for a Lee Thomas penalty goal soon after, the Sharks would have gone into the interval scoreless as the Blues ran riot.
Thomas was a class above as he scored twice and was instrumental in the Rush score and Coach Dai Young said: “We played with a lot of flair and showed we have the players to finish it off.”
Sale fought back in the second period with tries from Thomas and Scotland wing Rory Lamont but could not catch the Blues who finished the game on a high with James’s late score.
“It was a physical game and there are a lot of players in the dressing room with bumps and bruises. We played well in the first half but just fell away a bit in the second,” concluded Young.
