At least there was a bonus-point for coach James Chapron to reflect on after he saw his side fall short at Castle Park. A strong final 10 minutes had the home side hanging on by their fingernails and the Welsh side will be seeking to overturn the result in the return fixture this weekend.
Flanker Latu Makaafi scored twice for Doncaster and wing Dougie Flockhart, top points scorer in the English Championship this season, kicked two penalties and a conversion. Declan Cusack also kicked a penalty for the home side.
All the Dragons points came from their half-backs. Scrym half Charlie Davies crossed for a try and outside half Arwel Robson added the conversion and landed three penalties.
