A faultless kicking display by Steven Shingler and two tries by scrum-half Gareth Davies ensured the Scarlets won their first game of the RaboDirect Pro12 season at Parc y Scarlets with a comfortable victory over Benetton Treviso.

Shingler picked up 16 points with his reliable boot, converting both of Davies’ tries and landing four penalties as the Scarlets pack powered the home side to victory.

Prop Phil John gave a towering performance in both the set piece and in open play where his defensive skills caught the eye. Fellow prop Samson Lee and hooker Ken Owens offered the home side plenty of thrust in the first half while Rob Evans picked up the baton in the second half.

British and Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies made his return for the Scarlets as a second-half replacement.

Treviso played with plenty of attacking intent but had little return from their efforts until a chip and chase by Botes caught the Scarlets defence flat-footed and wing Ludovico Nitoglia was on hand scoot over under the posts.

But Shingler’s reliable boot, with three late penalties, was enough to secure a first victory of the Pro12 season for the Scarlets.

After the game, Scarlets Forwards Coach Danny Wilson said: “The boys played a mature and tactical game and credit to the leaders in the group they stepped up and made good decisions to manage the game well and keep Treviso under pressure.

“The first try one was a wonder try for Gareth Davies from halfway and credit to him, it was a tenacious and an outstanding piece of play. It was also good to see us scoring off a good scrum and turnover ball from their feed.”

Wilson paid tribute to the power his pack brought to proceedings. “We took some big steps last season in our scrummaging and our first three games this season including against Gloucester showed dominance in our scrum and our set piece went well again.

“If we can start to create a weapon there – along with the rugby we know we can play we’ll have a good balance to our game.

“It was good to get that home win; we weren’t hitting the alarm buttons last week – credit to the players they stayed focused and turned it around.”
