Scarlets hit back from nightmare start

The Scarlets made it a record six wins in a row at Parc y Scarlets as they hit back from a 14 point deficit to avenge their October defeat in Italy in the RaboDirect PRO12 with a 34-20 triumph over Benetton Treviso.

It was a win that moved them up two places in the table to fifth to keep them very much in the hunt for a Play-Off place at the end of the regular season.

The Welsh region were given an early warning sign by the visitors when they notched their first try after only 75 seconds and added a second to make it 14-0 after only 10 minutes. It could have been even worse had Willem de Waal landed a penalty for Benetton Treviso, but his miscue gave the home side a bit of respite on the scoreboard.

That amazing start, which featured tries from full back Ludovico Nitoglia and lock Valerio Bernaboed, who charged down an Aled Thomas kick out of his 22, should have set the Italians on their way to a notable double, but gradually the Scarlets got to grip with their task.

By the 37th minute the home side were back on level terms. Back row man Josh Turnbull charged over for the first try and then prop Deacon Manu muscled his way across from a close range maul to allow Thomas to kick his second conversion and make it 14-14.

There were two penalty misses from Thomas, however, and one from de Waal before the Treviso outside half gave his side a three point lead with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

The Scarlets started the second half with a bang and increase the pace and tempo of their game. Their pressure led to a third try from Wales 6 Nations squad member Liam Williams, who charged into the line on the narrow side of a ruck and barged his way over.

That try gave the Scarlets the lead for the first time and a Thomas penalty extended the advantage. The recovery wasn’t quite complete, though, as Nigel Davies’ men needed one more try to pick up a bonus point.

There were yellow cards for the Treviso replacement centre Gonzalo Garcia in the 62nd minute, and then new Welsh international Aaron Shingler six minutes later, but the only changes to the scoreboard came through a penalty apiece from the two outside halves.

Then replacement scrum half Liam Davies decided to stamp his mark on proceedings with four minutes left to play as he dummied his way through the visitor’s defence to scamper over from 20 metres out for a crucial fourth try that Thomas again improved.
