A rare appearance for Neil Jenkins at fullback saw Wales make up for the woe of Ellis Park in December 1996 as Wales lost with a much improved performance.

Arwel Thomas took the fly-half position that Jenkins was so used to filling and scored a try in the process. However, the Wales side featuring Rob Howley, Gareth Llewellyn, Dai Young, and ‘The Chief’, Dale McIntosh, never really got to grips with the brutality of the Boks as they went down five tries to one with Jenkins kicking five penalties.

Van der Westhuizen had the perfect game at scrum half bagging a hat-trick with his half-back partner Heny Honiball providing ten points from the boot. Jacques Olivier also crossed the line with Andre Joubert haunting Wales once more at the Arms Park with a try once again and conversion this time round.
