Phil Davies’s side scored seven tries in their Pool D encounter to set up a fitting climax on Saturday where they face Australia (who defeated Tonga 40-6) to decide who goes through from the group.
The match was only two minutes old when James Loxton scored. His effort was followed by prop Simon Gardiner before Tipuric scored the first of his three in the 16th minute.
Matthew Jarvis’s trusty boot kept the scoreboard ticking over as Wales raced to a 26-0 lead before Canada got a sniff of their first points in the 32nd minute. Skipper Harry Jones banged over a penalty but Wales responded immediately through Tipuric with a converted try.
But Canada refused to roll over and hit back through a Seb Pearson touchdown to make the halftime score 33-8.
Wales were always in control in the second half where further tries by Loxton, Rhys Downes and Tipuric cemented victory while Jarvis finished with a personal haul of 16 points after booting over five conversions and two penalties.
Canada had the final say with a try by Andrew Crow and conversion by Jones in the last minute.
