Ioan Lloyd helped himself to 18 points as Wales secured their first victory in the U18 Six Nations Festival with a 28-17 triumph against defending champions Scotland, at Sixways in Worcester.

Lloyd gave a masterful display from fly half, distributing the ball slickly to give his runners time and space while showing nifty footwork himself to race over for two tries.

He converted both his tries and the brace snapped up by fleet footed winger Louis Rees-Zammit to complete a supreme display.

Scotland actually opened the scoring with an early penalty from Harry Patterson but once Rees-Zammit went over in the 11th minute, Wales were always in control.

The Gloucester speedster glided over after Lloyd put him into space and he did the rest, making up for an earlier lapse when Scotland scrum half Jamie Dobie knocked the ball from his grasp with the try-line at his mercy.

From the kick-off, Wales spun the ball out wide and Rees-Zammit shrugged off the tackle from Matt Currie and ignored Patterson’s last-ditch attempt to stroll to the posts for a second try within two minutes.

Lloyd then got in on the try-scoring act when he got on the outside of lock Rory Jackson to race over. His third successful conversion of the first half gave Wales a comfortable 21-3 lead the break.

Lloyd waltzed his way over for his second try 10 minutes into the second half to suggest the Scottish dam had broken but a combination of poor discipline and yellow cards to Olly Burrows and James Fender kept Scotland in the game.

Scotland used their superior numbers to work full back Harry Patterson over in the corner for a well taken converted try but Wales were able to re-group to ease to victory.

Having lost their first game of the tournament to England, Wales will now look to make it two in a row when they complete their campaign against Italy on Sunday at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium.
