Lisa Neumann is determined to make up for lost time when the Rugby World Cup kicks off for Wales, against Scotland, on Sunday.
The electric wing has been a frustrated spectator in recent months after injury ruled her out of the squad’s warm up games in Canada and England.
But having surprised even herself by getting the nod from coach Ioan Cunningham last month, she is fit and raring to go.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be with the squad, at the World Cup,” she said. “It has been really difficult because I have had setbacks with injury and it was tough to be out.
“However, Ioan said; ‘Don’t think about what you can’t do, but rather what you can do’. I think that helped massively. It helped me to focus on what I could do with my injury.
“It is always hard when you see everyone else training and everyone else getting better. So, I just had to stay focused and I did what I could to get back into contention.
“I was so desperate to make the squad, so when I got the call, it was incredible.
“It was nerve wracking though because the players were told that if selected, they would get an email. So, I think most of us thought that if we got an actual phone call, it would mean we were not going to be selected. When the phone rung, I was so nervous and thought that was it.
“I thought I wasn’t in. My heart sank. But Ioan explained everything to me and said I was going.
“For me, it’s now about hopefully repaying the faith that has been shown in me. I have got a lot to prove and I guess it is a bit of a gamble on me after the injury and having missed the warm-up games.
“I have a point to prove and I know I need to work really hard and give it everything I’ve got.
“The Scotland game will be tough but we are in a better place now than we were when we played them in the Six Nations.
“It’s a game we have to win. We know how challenging it will be, but we watched Game Changers last night showing exactly how far we have come and that was amazing to see.
“We played really well in the Six Nations, in comparison to previous campaigns, so it does give us the confidence. I think as a squad were in a better place now. I’m really excited and hopefully we can put in big shift on Sunday and show how far we’ve progressed. “
