Get to know a little more about Wales v New Zealand
- Wales first ever test match against New Zealand was on the 16th December 1905 at Cardiff Arms Park. Wales were victorious 3-0 in the fixture leading to New Zealand’s only loss on their ‘Original All Blacks’ tour of the British Isles, France and the United States.
- Wales’ largest ever winning over the All Blacks is just five points which happened in 1953, which was the last time Wales defeated the All Blacks.
- Before the introduction of what we know now as Rugby Union, native Maori in New Zealand played a game called ki-o-rahi which resembled a mixture of Australian Rules Football and Rugby Football. It’s believed that the history of this game has fed into the traditional playing style of rugby in New Zealand.
- Dan Carter is the world’s top points scorer with a career total of 1598 points in an All Black career spanning 2003-2015.
- The All Blacks are the only international rugby union side with a winning record against every one of their opponents. The have lost to only six of the 19 nations they have played in test matches.
- The team performs the ‘Haka’, a Maori challenge or war dance ahead of every international fixture they play.
- Wales were the first nation to sing a national anthem before a sporting fixture. This came as a response to the Haka when Wales’ Teddy Morgan led the Cardiff crowd into a rendition of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
