New South African Head Coach de Villiers has named former Newport Gwent Dragons fullback Montgomery, along with fellow World Cup winners lock Victor Matfield and centre Francois Steyn, on the replacements’ bench for the first Test (kick off 3pm local time, 2pm BST).
Hooker John Smit, who led the Springboks to glory in Paris last October, keeps his place and the captaincy with prop Brian Mujati and second row Andries Bekker making their debuts in a starting line-up that also includes Zimbabwe-born winger Tonderai Chavhanga.
Grand Slam champions Wales are bidding to beat the Springboks on South African soil for the first time in seven attempts and reclaim the Prince William Cup the Springboks lifted when they won 34-12 at the Millennium Stadium last November.
