The Scarlets secured a mid-table finish in the Magners League but Davies’ men endured a disappointing campaign in the EDF Energy Cup and Heineken Cup.

But the Scarlets coach, reflecting on his debut season in charge, believes the future is bright for the west Wales region.

Davies said: “It’s been a really difficult season and it hasn’t been easy. But the group have never moved away from the task in hand and the players have worked really hard.

“We’re delighted with the way we’ve finished the season and we’d have liked it to have continued for another couple of weeks. But I’m really excited about next season.

“We were a team in transition this year but we will take a huge amount out of the season. We will have a really competitive squad and I’m encouraged with where we are going.

“Sometimes, we’ve tried to buy teams in the past but we’re in a much stronger place than last summer.”
