Defeat to Magners League leaders Munster at the weekend leaves the Scarlets with only an outside chance of a top-four finish, and while they can mathematically still make the play-off’s Nigel Davies has had to turn his attention to ensuring Heineken Cup qualification.

The Scarlets find themselves six points off fourth place, with only two rounds of action remaining and with the Dragons beating the Ospreys on Friday, the Newport based region closed the gap on the Scarlets and Davies’ aim now is to ensure they stay ahead of their rivals and clinch the final Heineken Cup qualification spot for next season.

“It is hugely disappointing as instead of competing for a top four place we have now got a battle for European qualification on our hands,” said Davies.

“It was always going to be a big best for this team, not just coming up against a side of Munster’s quality but also a side of Munster’s winning mentality.

“We have the quality and we can perform but we have to couple that with winning and that is something we are not going.

“We could have taken control of the game but we just were not good enough.

“We have got to learn how to win, we are always competitive and outperform sides but it is about winning.”
