Ross Moriarty will now follow in the footsteps of his father and uncle, by playing for Wales in a World Cup.

Moriarty’s inclusion is at the expense of Ospreys winger Eli Walker who has been forced to withdraw from the Rugby World Cup squad due to a hamstring injury.

“Due to the nature of the impending competition and the potential for his injury to extend into the latter stages of the Pool stage, the decision has been made to release Eli at present,” said a statement from the WRU.

“Gloucester flanker Ross Moriarty has been called into Wales’ 31-man squad and will link up with the rest of the squad tomorrow (Tuesday).”

Moriarty originally missed out on Warren Gatland’s initial World Cup squad but a brief eye-catching cameo against Italy has seen him recalled.

Even in what must be a devastating time for Walker, he was quick to wish his replacement all the best on twitter, saying he was ‘chuffed’ another Gorseinon RFC lad gets a chance’

Walker himself was called up alongside Mike Phillips following injuries to Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb.

Moriarty, who won two Junior World Championships with England, won two caps in Wales’ summer schedule and follows in the footsteps of both his father Paul and uncle Richard – who played in the inaugural World Cup held in New Zealand in 1987 – in pulling on the red jersey in a World Cup.
