In that role he had responsibilities for developing coaches and rugby at age groups below Under 19 in Wales. He retired from the WRU after dedicated service in the early 2000s.
Prince was a man of the Monmouthshire valleys. Brought up in Newbridge and educated at Lewis School, Pengam, he was a very talented sportsman who excelled at rugby. He played for the Welsh Secondary Schools.
He furthered his education at St Luke’s College, Exeter in company with a group of fellow Welsh players.
When Prince returned to Wales he taught in the county of his birth for many years. In those years he was an impressive scrum half who played for several clubs including Pontypool, Tredegar, Ynysddu and Usk. After his playing days he coached a few clubs before giving long, loyal and outstanding service to New Tredegar RFC. Despite a serious illness John continued to work for his club until his untimely death.
Prince was a popular figure wherever he went. He established relationships with rugby people throughout the world including Peter de Villiers, the one-time coach of South Africa. He was a talented, kind and generous man. His passing will be felt by many.
John was a loving family man. The WRU expresses its condolences to his wife Barbara and her family on their very sad loss.
