Sean Lynn’s first game in charge of Wales ended in a narrow 24-21 defeat to Scotland on the opening weekend of the 2025 Guinness Women’s Six Nations in Edinburgh. His new look Welsh side matched the Scots try for try in a game in which both No 8s, Scotland’s Evie Gallagher and Wales’ Georgia Evans received red cards. Evans received her marching orders for picking up two yellow cards, while Gallagher’s initial yellow card was eventually upgraded to red. Wales got off to a great start when hooker Carys Phillips converted a driving line out into the first try of the Lynn era as head coach. Keira Bevan added the conversion and Wales were looking good. The scrum, with new starters in props Maisie Davies and Jenni Scoble, along with lock Alaw Pyrs, made a big impression early on, but by the break the home side were leading 10-7. They dominated possession and territory and had a driving line-out try from Rachel Malcolm ruled out by the TMO for obstruction. A Helen Nelson penalty got the Scots on the board and she went on to convert a first half try from lock Sarah Bonar. To make matters worse for Wales, Evans received her first yellow card for pulling down the maul. Scotland looked to have extended their lead in the second half when an initial break from Evie Gallagher paved the way for Lisa Thomson to score. Once again, the TMO came to the rescue of the visitors as an obstruction was spotted in the build-up to the try and it was ruled out. Some poor defending from Wales enabled Thomson to hack the back downfield where centre Emma Orr picked up and ran in a second try. Weston once again converted. Wales then went on a rare attack and home full back Chloe Rollie was driven back over her own try line. But the tackle by Evans on her was deemed to be high and she was shown a second yellow having only just returned to the field. Gallagher then joined her on the sideline for a dangerous cleanout that was upgraded from yellow to red after a bunker review and both sides had to play with 14 players. Abbie Fleming picked up a driving line out try to get Wales back in the hunt and Bevan’s conversion made it a three-point game. The heavens then opened and as conditions worsened, Scotland once again took control of the game. A brilliant passage of play led to a try for Leah Bartlett, once again improved by Weston, and it took some brave defence from the Welsh players to hold the home side as they went for the jugular. There was a final try from Gwenllian Pyrs to add some spice to the final throes of the game, but that was as good as it got for Wales and Lynn had to be content with picking up a losing bonus-point in his first outing as an international coach.
